You already know that sex is fun and pleasurable. That much is clear.
But have you ever wondered what happens to your body when you don’t have sex?
What happens to your libido? Your health? And most scary of all, do you lose it if you don’t use it?
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to answer for you in today’s infographic.
Because over the past week, we’ve looked at scientific studies to work out exactly what happens to the human body when it goes through abstinence (voluntary or not).
Check it out:
We abstain from time to time due to a variety of reasons: maybe it’s that time of the month.
Maybe you’re saving it for someone special. Maybe you just don’t feel like doing it.
Whatever the reason is, abstinence can have profound effects on your body, health, mood, and even performance.
Here are the 10 things that happen to your body when you don’t have sex for a while:
1) You Get Sicker Quicker
Believe it or not, sex can be literally good for you. Aside from the fact that it feels good, getting on the down low builds up antibodies that help our immune system fight away common flus and colds.
When you’re abstaining, your chances of catching the cold might be higher than those who are consistently getting in on.
2) Self-Esteem Becomes A Problem
Overtime, not having sex can trick your brain into thinking that you’re unattractive. Or worthless. Or ugly.
With these thoughts piling up, self-esteem becomes a huge problem, which can further reduce your chances of getting laid.
This is also why healthy relationships engage in sexual activities at least twice a week – regular intercourse helps create a feeling of security and self-assurance.
3) The Bladder Is Harder To Control
Sex is an awesome way to exercise your pelvic floor, and abstaining from the deed means you don’t get much opportunity to work on your hips and pelvis.
Unless you’re working out in the gym and targeting these very specific areas, there’s a chance that your bladder will be harder to contain and your pee even harder to deal with.
4) Possible Blood Pressure Problems
Let’s face it: sex is a pretty good exercise. In fact, it’s such a good form of aerobic exercise that abstaining from it might spike up your blood pressure, especially if it’s the only form of exercise you get.
Alternatively, you can pick up on running or swimming a couple days a week to keep blood pressure problems at bay while you’re abstaining.
5) You Get Stressed
Sex is a pleasurable experience, not just for our bodies but also our brains. Sleeping with someone increases the production of brain chemicals that boost our mood and improve happiness.
This means a much better stress response and a higher tolerance level. Without sex, you have to find other ways to release serotonin, endorphin, and other chemicals that give you a wonder boost.
6) You Fall Asleep Slower
Ever wondered why it’s so easy to fall asleep after a rough session? Sure, exhaustion plays a part in that, but it’s also because the body releases a special sleep-inducing hormone called prolactin after sex.
This chemical lulls the body to sleep much faster by relaxing the muscles and creating a wave of relief for the brain. Without it, you may find it harder to fall asleep.
7) Heart Attacks Become More Possible
Just when you need another excuse to get down and dirty, remember that sex is an awesome form of exercise.
You’re testing muscular endurance and improving cardiovascular strength. It’s a two-in-one exercise that helps lower blood pressure.
The increased in heart rate is especially great in preventing heart attacks, so much so that having regular sex can reduce your chances of acquiring a heart disease in half.
8) Your Memory Becomes Weaker
Sex doesn’t only make you healthier – it makes you smarter, too.
Getting it on frequently helps in the creation of new cells in the brain’s memory hub. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel sharper and more aloof after a fun night in, it’s because you are ushering the birth of baby neurons with every thrust.
9) Sex Might Be More Painful Next Time
And it’s not because you or your partner’s vaginal walls have become tigther since the last time you did it. The tightening of the muscles after a long period of abstinence is one of the biggest myths in sex ed.
It is impossible for vaginal walls to become tight, not unless surgery is involved.
What actually happens is a decrease in libido, which effectively alters how the body responds to sexual stimuli. This means girls don’t get as much lubrication, accounting for the painful sensations after a long period of abstinence.
10) Temporary Erectile Dysfunction Happens
While girls get less lubrication, guys might experience temporary erectile dysfunction with increased abstinence.
As in females, the body starts responding to sexual stimuli differently, accounting for a slower response time.
The best way to solve this is to get busy. Doing so reinvigorates the body’s response ability, and puts your rhythm back into normal.
